Teaching will be practice based. Through a total of 24-hours, participants will learn to design and decorate the Iznik Plate. Guidance will be given on a one-to-one and a group basis. This course is limited to 8 seats and will be held on Wednesdays 18:00 -21:00. The starting date is 19 June 2019. Registration is Mandatory and beginners are welcome. (Age 16+)

Ceramic Short Course: Design & Decorate the Iznik Plate

19th June 2019 – 7th August 2019

Materials: papers (A4), pencils, rubber, sharper, mount board, brush and ink (The Islamic College will provide all the necessary materials throughout this course.)

Aims:

• To give students a fundamental introduction to plate designs from the Islamic arts, in particular, Islamic ceramic designs.
• To introduce base elements in design and Decorate the Iznik Plate
• To explore the role of geometry in an Islamic ceramic
• To teach students a traditional geometrical composition as well as the variety of floral motifs.
• To provide an opportunity for participants to create their own composition.
• By the end of the course, the student should have a ceramic plate with a biomorphic pattern

 

Materials:

• H3, B2 pencils
• Roller
• Compose
• Brushes (N. 00, 1 and 2)
• Tracing paper
• Chalk
• Ceramic plate
• Glaze and under Glaze

(The Islamic college will provide all the necessary materials throughout this course)

Course Plan:

Week 1:

• Slide Show and talk on Islamic ceramic, including history, traditional ways of drawing pattern, plate and tiles and glaze preparation.
• Practical geometry: dividing a circle into 6, 8 and 12 fold.
• Practical geometry: Drawing biomorphic pattern base on geometric analysis.

Week 2:

• Analysing a plate design base on grids drawn in class.
• Tracing the outline of the image on a tracing paper
• Transferring image from tracing paper on to watercolor paper using traditional methods.

Week 3:

• Practicing horizontal and vertical line with a pencil on a piece of paper.
• Practicing spirals with pencil on a piece of paper. Practicing horizontal, vertical line and spirals with fine natural hairbrushes on ceramic tiles.
• Ceramic tiles will be fired in a kiln

Week 4:

Understanding the fine hand movements on the chosen patterns.

• Preparing handmade glaze.
• Outlining the traced image with a fine brush and handmade glaze on the ceramic plate.

Week 5:

Continuing with paint application

• Understanding the different types of glazes.
• Test glazes are to make a series of tests.

Week 6:

Continue with the rest of applying paints

• Introduction of traditional solid techniques
 for applying the glaze.
• Finishing the main body of paint

Week 7:

Introduction of shading techniques

• Finishing the whole painting on the plate.
• Putting the piece into the kiln for the first round of firing,

Week 8:

Over glaze application demonstration for ceramics

• Finishing the final glazing.
