Introduction

The Hawza, or Seminary, is a centuries-old institution. It has historically produced some of the greatest scholars of the Muslim world and to this day continues to provide a thorough education in the Islamic sciences.

Here in London, the Islamic College seeks to continue this great intellectual tradition. By bringing together the best of the classical and modern approaches to Islam in a spiritual environment, the Hawza studies programme gives its students the chance to gain classical, authoritative Islamic knowledge.

The Hawza studies programme offers a variety of modules based on the Islamic sciences, including Islamic law (fiqh), its principles (usul al-fiqh), practical ethics (akhlaq) and spirituality (irfan).  These are open to anyone who meets the criteria for each module.
Regular workshops are also organized, where outside speakers and experts are invited to give presentations on subjects useful to Hawza students. These encompass both secular skills such as public speaking, time management and conflict resolution; and religious disciplines, such as the preparation of a body for burial, solemnizing marriages and the leading of prayers.

Course Outline

Our Hawza programme is divided into two diploma courses, Diploma in Muslim Chaplaincy and a Diploma in Shi’a Studies. Students also have the option of taking individual modules from either programme. Each module is taught over the course of two terms, with an examination at the end of each.
