The Islamic College is happy to introduce a Modern Standard Arabic evening course for beginners. Modern Standard Arabic is the Arabic used today in books, newspapers, magazines and broadcasting throughout the Arab world.

This course is suitable for people who are new to the Arabic language or those who are already familiar with the alphabet. A student-centred approach to introduce basic grammatical structures will be used on the course which aims to familiarize students with a basic knowledge of writing, reading and speaking skills in Arabic. There will also be a focus on listening comprehension to facilitate conversation.

The course is taught in English and Arabic and uses contemporary printed and audio material, in addition to the course text book, to cover the three skills. A mixture of old and modern methods of teaching will be used which are proven to greatly enhance the learning experience and to understanding the language.
The course is taught using the text book text “A New Arabic Grammer” by J.AHaywood and H.M Nahmad
and audio CDs.

Initially the course will run for the duration of a term (4 hours of teaching per week - 2 hrs per evening on Monday & Wednesdays) as follow:
Semester 1(Basic Level)

  • Arabic Writing Skills, such the alphabet and Arabic script
  • Arabic Reading Skills, such as reading simple words and Arabic sentences as well as pronunciation of Arabic words.
  • Arabic Listening Skills, using the audio tapes
  • Reasonable conversation, basic Arabic conversation
  • Comprehension, understanding basic Arabic grammatical structures

Semester 2 (Intermediate Level) same as above but at intermediate level

  • Arabic Reading Skills, improve the reading level of more advanced Arabic sentences
  • Arabic Writing Skills, higher level writing of sentences
  • Conversation, improve conversation techniques
  • Comprehension, higher level understanding of grammatical structures

Semester 3  (Advanced Level) same as above but at advanced level

  • Arabic Reading Skills, advanced level reading such as magazines and newspapers, and being able to read classical Arabic
  • Arabic Writing Skills, advanced level writing such more complicated sentences
  • Conversation, higher ability of conversing in Arabic
  • Comprehension, to be able to understand Arabic at a higher level such as TV, radio and broadcasting.

At the end of the course, students will be able to read and write Arabic and hold reasonable conversation.  The course will be run by qualified and experience teachers of the Arabic language and the Holy Quran who has many years of experience in the field of teaching Modern Arabic language.

Cost:                    £250.00 (25% discount for Students) per semester
