Core Modules

 The core modules are designed to deepen the academic understanding of Islam from an insider point of view for both the students coming from a BA in Islamic Studies and those with other backgrounds. In addition to exposing the student to an in-depth, systematic and sophisticated understanding of major sources of Islamic knowledge, these modules will examine different methodological approaches in Cultural Sciences and adopt the most appropriate of them for Islamic Studies embarking on a critical study of major schools of thought and the main ideas that help in shaping Islamic knowledge as it is today.

Designated Modules  

The designated modules complement the core modules taking students deeper into specialised areas. The students need to choose three subjects from the following topics as their designated modules each of which has 20 credits. Not all modules are offered every year.

  • Islamic Mysticism
  • Islamic Philosophy
  • Authority in Shi’a Islam
  • Classical History of Islam
  • Islamic Law
  • Islam and Modern Politics
  • Islam and Modernity

Dissertation

All students registered for the MA course are required to complete a dissertation of 12000 -15000 words.
