Certificate of Higher Education in Quranic Arabic

The Certificate of Higher Education in Quranic Arabic aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of classical Arabic and to train them in skills that are essential for understanding Arabic texts. The course is designed to teach students all aspects of the language: speaking, reading, writing, comprehension and grammar.

This course is ideal for students wishing to undertake Islamic studies in the future, or for those who simply wish to be proficient in the Arabic language in order to understand the Holy Quran, Hadith and Arabic texts in their original language.

Course Outline

About half of the modules of Quranic Arabic are shared with the students of the BA in Islamic Studies. These modules have been running successfully for many years and are validated by Middlesex University. The remaining modules have been carefully developed to ensure students learn Quranic Arabic in greater depth. Quranic Arabic also offers three modules designed to provide students with supplementary skills and spiritual direction; these are Recitation of the Quran and Tajwid, Research Methodology and Islamic Ethics.

Course Modules

Altogether the Quranic Arabic course comprises the following modules:
- Spoken Arabic
- Arabic Comprehension and Writing
- Arabic Comprehension and Reading
- Arabic Grammar
- Analytical Arabic Grammar
- Recitation of the Quran and Tajwid
- Research Methodology
- Islamic Ethics

Learning and Teaching Strategy

Quranic Arabic is taught through lectures, individual exercises, group activities, conversation, listening to DVD recordings of native speakers and group tutorials. On Fridays, students are taken to a local mosque where the Friday Prayer sermons are conducted in Arabic and on return to the College, the main issues covered in the sermons are discussed. This is an invaluable part of the course; in addition to the spiritual benefits of attending Friday Prayers, it provides students with an opportunity to experience Arabic in a real-life setting and enhances their comprehension and spoken skills.
