Muslim Cultures & Civilisation Course Structure

Full-time students are expected to select modules totalling 120 credits each year of study. Modules have either 10 or 20 credits, depending on the level of work required, and are independent, self-contained components which form the building blocks of the degree course. Modules consist of a series of lectures, seminars and assignments covering the syllabus of the particular subject, with an assessment at the end.

Designated modules are offered in addition to compulsory modules, and students have to take a given number of these modules as an integral part of their studies at levels two and three. Overall Structure of the Programme:

BA (Honors) in Muslim Cultures and Civilisation is normally studied full-time over 3 years. Each academic year includes two semesters. It can also be studied part-time over 5 Years. The BA (Honors) course at the Islamic College operates on a modular/credit structure, as shown in the chart below:

Level Compulsory Modules Designated Modules Total No. of Modules Total Credits
1 5 7 12 120
2 2 11 13 120
3 2 11 13 120
Total 9 29 38 360

Successful completion of a module in each semester earns students 20 or 10 credits – depending on the scope of the module – totalling 60 credits per semester, 120 per academic year, and 360 credits in three years, including the completion of the project (20 credits). Each module is allocated a fixed credit weighting which gives an indication of the workload associated with that module. Credit points can be regarded as the currency for modular degrees and are instrumental in determining whether a student has studied and passed sufficient modules to qualify for a degree.
