Physics - AS Level

Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are interested in Physics or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades A*-C (including grade B or above in Physics). In addition, as part of the interview process, you may be required to sit subject-specific, English and maths assessments.

After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable with respect to your needs and abilities.


Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing – for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.


Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
GCE AS Level in Physics.

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Physics at A2 Level. It may also count towards your UCAS points.

What will I study?
You will be encouraged to:
• develop your interest in, and enthusiasm for physics, including developing an interest in further study and careers in physics;
• appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society;
• develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works;
• develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Physics and how they relate to each other.

Unit 2: Electrons, Waves and Photons
• Electric current
• Resistance
• DC circuits
• Waves
• Quantum physics

Unit 3: Practical Skills in Physics 1
You will be assessed on one task from each of the following categories: qualitative, quantitative and evaluative tasks.

How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, practical work and individual tutorials as well as personal study.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a series of examinations and practical work.
