Media - AS Level
Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are interested in Media Studies or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses.
What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in English Language). In addition, as part of the interview process, you may be required to sit subject-specific, English and maths assessments.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable with respect to your needs and abilities.
Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2
Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer’s intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2
Interpret information:You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Media Studies at A2 Level (2nd year of A Level). It will also count towards your UCAS points.
What will I study?
You will study a range of media texts and topics, as well as analyse media texts and learn to create your own media product, in the context of the key conceptual areas of Media Forms and Conventions, Media Institutions, Media Audiences and Media Representations.
You will have access to audio and video playback facilities and the Internet, in addition to library resources for independent learning and research.
For media production work, you will have adequate resources for the implementation of production projects in the relevant medium. These include:
• 35 mm/digital cameras for still images, scanners, printers and computers
• ICT hardware facilities and DTP and/or digital image manipulation software/web design software
• Audio recording and editing facilities
• Video or recording and editing facilities.
How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, individual tutorials as well as personal study.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a series of examinations and coursework.
What support is available while I am on the course?
You will have access to a range of online resources and enrichment facilities including study skills tutorials and sports facilities as well as group meetings once a week.
