Languages

A level Languages are exciting, fun and challenging. Not only do they help you to communicate with people, but they are also becoming increasingly important in improving career prospects.

You can derive a great deal of enjoyment from learning another language particularly Arabic which also offers an understanding of the Holy Qur'an. Studying Languages at A level will you to build on the skills you already acquired at GCSE but with the added advantage of delving more deeply into the culture, environment and daily life of the countries being studied.

The two year A level Languages courses (excluding Arabic) are divided into six modules. Areas of study include listening, reading and writing, preparing an oral topic, conversation, interpreting, topics and texts, creative writing, discursive essays and task-based assignments. The assessment is based on two 10-15 minute oral examinations and four written examinations consisting of one 45-minute paper, two 90-minute papers, and one 2½-hour paper. The Arabic assessment is based on two written examinations – one on Arabic language and civilization, and the other on Arabic literature; it requires the student to translate material which he/she has never seen before. Each paper is three hours long, and all examinations must be taken in June before the end of the course.

Languages can combine happily with most other subjects – particularly English, economics and business studies. Languages can be studied on their own at degree level, including multiple language degrees, but can also be combined with a wide range of other subjects, such as the sciences, humanities, or the arts. Languages are assuming an increasing importance in business and commerce, and the ability to communicate in another language can make an important contribution to your future.
