Computer Science
A level computer
studies is the most interesting and useful option, suitable for any
student who has a systematic and logical approach to problem solving. In
return it offers an awareness of the implications of computers today and
confidence in the practical use of computer based systems. Over the
coming years all of us, regardless of the careers we choose, will find
our lives becoming increasingly influenced by computers, an appreciation
of it is invaluable. Although it is not necessary to have taken GCSE in
the subject before, it aims to extend experience gained from the
information technology component at that level.

The new computing course will:
-
prepare students who wish to go on to higher education courses or employment where a knowledge of Computing would be beneficial
-
allow students to demonstrate their knowledge of the fundamental principles of the subject
-
require no prior knowledge of Computing or ICT.
The two year A level computer studies course is comprised of six
modules based on both theoretical study and practical experience.
Areas of study include applications and effects, system development,
data representation, number based denary, hardware, peripherals, data
communication and networking, system software and programming
concepts, files and databases. The assessment is based on five modular
examinations which include field study, to be taken in June before the
end of the course, individual
coursework.
