Arabic - A Level
Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are interested in Arabic or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses.
What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in English Language) and AS Level in Arabic obtained from 2008/2009 onwards.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable with respect to your needs and abilities.
Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2
Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer’s intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2
Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.
What qualification will I receive?
GCE A Level in Arabic.
Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Arabic in Higher Education. It will also count towards your UCAS points. This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields.
What will I study?
The course consists of three sections:
Section A: Reading
Section B: Translation
Section C: Essays on chosen topic(s) and/or text(s)
You will be required to demonstrate skills in advanced level Arabic reading and in
the transfer of meaning from English into Arabic. To promote research and a greater
knowledge and understanding of Arabic culture and/or society, you must produce
two Arabic-language essays in response to questions related to your chosen topic(s)
and/or text(s).
You will be expected to recognise and use Arabic in a variety of contexts and in
relation to the following general topic areas:
1. Youth culture and concerns
2. Lifestyle: health and fitness
3. The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the Arabic-speaking world
4. Education and employment
5. Customs, traditions, beliefs and religions
6. National and international events: past, present, literature; and the arts.
How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, and individual tutorials as well as personal study.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through an examination at the end of the year.

You will have access to a range of online resources and enrichment facilities including study skills tutorials and sports facilities as well as group meetings once a week.
